Graduate student wins second best award of AESW 2016元智資管學生林柏霖 榮獲AESW 2016科技英文自動偵錯國際競賽亞軍

Po-Lin Lin (林柏霖), a first-year graduate student of Information Management, defeats competitors coming from Stanford University, University of Washington and University of Dublin and wins the second best award of Automated Evaluation of Scientific Writing 2016 Shared Task (AESW 2016). Harvard University is the championship in this year.

The goal of the contest is to assess whether the computer evaluates automatically grammar mistakes of scientific writing. Lin said his team developed the automated evaluation system by the technology of natural language processing, and almost beat the team from Harvard University. YZU team is the only attendee coming from Asia. He thanks two professors to instruct the team: Liang-Chih Yu (禹良治), Associate Professor of YZU, and Lung-Hao Lee (李龍豪), postdoctoral fellow of National Taiwan Normal University. The team plans to present the thesis in San Diego in June.

元智大學資管系碩士生一年級林柏霖，參加BEA11 (The 11th Workshop on Innovative Use of NLP for Building Educational Applications) 舉辦的AESW 2016科技英文自動偵錯國際競賽(Automated Evaluation of Scientific Writing Shared Task 2016)，與哈佛大學(Harvard University)、史丹佛大學(Stanford University)、華盛頓大學(University of Washington)、都柏林大學(University of Dublin)等國際一流學校團隊競賽，榮獲第二名佳績。

林柏霖表示，本次競賽目標是在評估電腦是否能正確偵測出科技英文寫作之文法錯誤，團隊以自然語言處理技術發展自動文法偵錯系統，僅以些微差距輸給哈佛大學，獲得第二名，該團隊也是亞洲唯一的參賽隊伍。

林柏霖說，這次競爭者都是來自世界各國的強手，歷經數月準備，最後在二元分類(binary prediction)項目綜合指標F-Score，獲得亞軍。這次的比賽經由元智資管系教授禹良治以及台師大博士後研究員李龍豪共同指導，本次成果將於今年6月在美國聖地牙哥進行論文發表。

禹良治表示，隨著自然語言處理與教育科技的進步，透過自動文法錯誤偵測、修改建議提示等技術的輔助，將可提高第二外語的學習效率。這些技術也已受到相關產業的關注，如全球最大的教育測驗服務組織Educational Testing Service (ETS)，產品包含國人熟知的托福(TOEFL)、多益(TOEIC)等。禹良治表示，未來元智團隊會將此應用從英文領域延伸到中文領域，發展雙語文法自動偵錯與修正技術，同時輔助本國學生與外籍生學習第二外語。
